Color Uniformity

An element of creativity lies in questioning authority and breaking widely-accepted rules.  Or, at least that's what I tell myself when stepping out on a limb.  For example- we are taught that an outfit must include more than one color (unless we are attending a funeral or our own wedding).  If we deck ourselves out in complete white, green, or purple, it would seem we have lost our marbles or, even worse, have absolutely no fashion sense.

The same is true for decorating a home.  I believe many people fear messing up their decor, so they stick with a rather boring aesthetic and promise to add color through pillows, knick knacks, and the like.  Today, I'd like to be bold in my creativity and show how using varying shades of one individual color or even the same shade can create a dynamic room with lots of character.  This kitchenette is decked out in kelly green and makes a bold statement.

This living room uses softer shades of sea foam for a lighter, more ethereal uniformity.

Black adds drama and depth, and looks great with gold accents.

Other great spaces that employed color uniformity...

Keeping such a uniform color palette makes a room funky and adds an element of interest.  The same shade can be used for smaller spaces such as entryways, hallways, and guest bathrooms.  For instance, the pink hallway above works well as the bold pinks play off one another.  For larger more open spaces, it is best to use varying shades of one color.  Use the bolder shades for focal points in the room.  What do you think of color uniformity?

  5. Love you being bold with this post. You hit the nail on the head with the intro. I'm obsessing over the black room with pops of gold. I seem to be all about gold lately.

  7. You're right, everyone always sticks with the whole neutral palette and adding colors with things like throw pillows. This is a bold and different approach! I like the idea of using varying shades of one color. I think the Kelly green room is amazing though, a real statement! I also love all white rooms, so serene.
